THE FLIEGERKOMBI, OR COMBINATION
Initial German military flight suit design took place during the late
Reichswehr period, being developed and first issued (based on the
official model numbers) during the 1933-1934 time frame, at least a full
year prior to the formal institution of the Luftwaffe on 26 February,
1935. All flight suits during this period were of the Fliegerkombi
(step-in combination suit) pattern, and set basic manufacturing design standards
for all future combination suits.
It is significant to
that, as documented by comtemporary photography, these garments predated
the Luftwaffe by an undetermined but possibly considerable time, likely
being developed for the Fliegerschaft (flying) personnel of the
Deutscher Luftsportverband (DLV) subsequent to its institution
on 25 March, 1933.
