The Single-Zippered Flight Boots

At some point soon after the war commenced- presumably during late 1939 or early 1940- the Luftwaffe modified the Pst 4004 configuration by eliminating the boot's outside zipper.

It has always been presumed that this change was intended to conform with the drive to conserve war materiel. However, it is just as likely that the need (being addressed during the winter of 1939-1940) for a heated boot which required a simplified design was as much a driver of the change as the need for economy. See the Pst 4004E section for further discussion.

At this point the Luftwaffe flight boot took on its final design. Initially, the single-zippered boots were of the same high quality as their double-zippered cousins.
